Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ

BJJ is a Martial art based on grappling and ground fighting techniques.
The aim of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is to control and subdue a larger and stronger opponent through the use of superior techniques, leverage and body mechanics.

With the emphasis on grappling rather than striking, students are able to practice with varying levels of intensity without the threat of serious injuries which can occur more often in martial arts focused on punching and kicking.

Patrick James
Owner / Head Instructor

My first exposure to martial arts was at the age of 14 years, when I studied the art of Judo for a few years, but I gave this up to focus on football.

Many years later I realised that my real passion was for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. In 2011 I was introduced to Master Felipe Alves De Souza and Master Jose Henrique 'Leao' Teixeira, a 6th dan black belt under the famous Gracie organisation.

Later that year at the English Open BJJ championships, I won gold as a white belt - from that moment on, I wanted to become one of the top fighters in the world and make up for the years that I had lost.

In 2014, I had my biggest win, in the home of BJJ, the legendary Tijuca Tennis Club, in Rio De Janeiro, where I achieved Gold in the World Masters competition.

BJJ FOR KIds & Teenagers

“The biggest failure you can have in life is making the mistake of never trying”

BJJ classes for Kids and Teenagers at Triccs are a huge part of what we do. We can see very clearly that young people who learn to persist with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu learn some of the most important lessons in life - how to win and lose gracefully, how to improve through consistent effort, and how to work closely with other people to learn and share new skills.

And of course it’s great to have the fitness and flexibility that come with regular BJJ classes.
